Demand for specialised MBA courses on the rise


The world of business in the last decade has undergone unprecedented transformation. The impetus has shifted to online mode in a big way. E-commerce and e-retailing/e-tailing are the buzz words today. Entrepreneurship, Manufacturing, Start-ups, Sustainability, and Environment are another set of buzz words.

Above shift has also started impacting the B-school curriculum. The more reputed and higher ranked best b-schools in India though slow but were doing their bit to upgrade their curriculum. Curriculum upgradation is an incremental process. It happens by introducing new elements in the existing courses followed by developing and introducing new courses and lastly when there are enough courses then designing specialization or a programme.

If we look in to the b-school landscape in India from the above lens, we can find some of the top MBA colleges like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Lucknow, ISB Hyderabad and such schools have been pioneers in introducing specialized courses and programmes to cater to the growing demand for specialized MBA programmes. IIM Ahmedabad and Shobhit University started a specialized MBA programme in Agri Business Management and soon IIM Lucknow followed the suit to start the same programme at its institute. Prior to these it was IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand) that was offering a specialized MBA programme in rural sector. Today many reputed b-schools have introduced Agri Business Management as a specialized MBA Programme in their portfolio of programmes. Owing to the boom in Entrepreneurship, IIM Bangalore has started a specialized programme called “PGPEM” or Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management. It is a 22-month weekend residential management programme for high performing professionals from across industry verticals.

IIM Bangalore and MDI Gurugram are also credited for starting a new specialized MBA programme in Public Policy and Management (PPM). It is a highly specialized programme meant for class-I government officers to equip them with professional management skills so that they are better prepared to administer and deliver public systems in India.


To cater to the needs of the manufacturing sector, IIM Calcutta developed a specialized programme called “Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing”. This programme has been developed to fulfill the industry demands for techno-managerial leaders responsible for the neo-industrial revolution. For this IIM Calcutta has collaborated with IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras.

IIM Calcutta has also developed a specialized master’s programme in International Management once again collaborating with a body that has elite club of 28 premier business schools from all over the world. The demand in the market for a programme truly global in nature was the key driver for developing this programme. With a similar philosophy, MDI Gurgaon started PGPIM (Post Graduate Programme in International Management) in collaboration with ESCP EAP, a Europe based reputed business school. The unique feature of this programme is dual degree for students who enrol in this programme. They get MBA degree (Equivalent) of two institutions located in two different countries viz. India and Paris/Germany/Italy.

Analytics is another area that has come up like anything today. With the advent of cloud computing data analytics has gained a lot of importance. With data analytics business can derive a lot of value. It is for this reason, data analytics has gained a lot of prominence. Data analytics is selling like hot cake in industry today. To cater to this demand from industry IIM Calcutta has started a new programme called Post Graduate Programme in Data Analytics. Again IIM Calcutta has collaborated  with ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) and IIT Kharagpur to offer this programme. Very soon many institutions may develop capabilities and follow suit and make offerings in data/business analytics. Environment and sustainability is a big concern today for one and all. Businesses all over the globe are trying their level best to be sensitive to the issues of sustainability and environmental degradation. There is an enhanced awareness to environmental issues and businesses are taking care of these right since the beginning of setting up an enterprise. IIM Lucknow is catering to this demand by offering a specialized MBA in sustainability and environment called PGP-SM or Post Graduate Programme in Sustainable Management.

Today, many businesses are family owned. These businesses require a great deal of professionalism. A lot of families that own these businesses understand the significance of making the workplace more professional. To cater to this demand of the market, Indian School of Business Hyderabad m offers a Post Graduate Programme in Management for Family Business. Apart from specialized MBA or post graduate programmes ISB also offers many specialized courses and certificate programmes. For example, to cater to the demands of the manufacturing sector, ISB offers a Certificate Programme in Manufacturing and Operations Management. Thus, we can safely say that top business schools in India are certainly aware of the boom in demand for specialized MBA programmes and courses as evinced by multitude of offerings created by them to meet the supply gap in the market.
